From the “Spiritual conquest” to the “inc ulturated evangelization ”:
Indianism in contemporary Mexico
Keywords:
Mexico, religion, indianismAbstract
In this text I approach to the relationship between Catholic religion, State and-Indian-otherness from a historical perspective. First, I develop the process of evangelization or spiritual conquest with its difficulties and limitations. Then I approach the political ideological implications of the nation state and its harmonic and conflicting relations with religion, and the decentralization of the state by the inclusion in a neoliberal logic. After that, I reflect on indianism like a cultural and identity proposal, including its religion dimension-inculturated evangelization-, against segregationist or integrationist claims, emphasizing the ambiguity of the current state and the moves in dialogue with it.
